Top Tips for Keeping Warm on Outdoor Activations

written by Melina

One of the biggest challenges facing promotional teams on outdoor activations is the Great British Weather!  We have worked on some fantastic outdoor campaigns this winter already, and with a few chilly months still to go, we share our Top Ten Tips for keeping warm on long outdoor shifts.

1. Layer up – wear as many layers as you can and make them baggy. Each layer traps an air layer of warmth, so you want room in between each layer for warmth to circulate.

2. Invest in thermals – both top and trousers. These are a lifesaver and not necessarily expensive. Decathlon stocks a wide range of thermals from as little as £3.99 (

3. Wear a hat, scarf, gloves and most importantly thick socks – preferably thermal. It is important your feet are warm. Where possible wear trainers instead of leather shoes. Layer up by wearing a thinner pair of socks underneath thicker ones. Tuck your trousers into your socks to avoid cold air entering.

4. Wear wool – it is made of complex fibres and has the best insulation for the cold.

5. Eat heartily – stews, soups, rice. Think complex carbohydrates so that your body has enough food to burn to keep you warm in the first place.

6. Stay hydrated – water is amazing for retaining body heat, the more you have in your system, the easier it is to keep warm.

7. Take extra layers with you – so that you can always add more if you are still cold. Replace a layer immediately if it gets wet – wear a waterproof top layer where possible.

8. Retain the heat – when you are inside keep your coat on, this will heat up your core giving your body heat to retain when you get outside.

9. Hand warmers – warm hands make a huge difference.  A pack of 30 disposables can be bought from Decathlon for £8.99, or you can buy reusable ones for £1 each from most sports stores.

10. Hot drinks – they won’t make you feel warm for hours, but for a few minutes a hot drink will create a feeling of warmth in your hands and stomach, and who doesn’t love a cheeky hot chocolate?
