Cocktail of the week: A hot one for the ‘horror winter’

written by Florence

The winter scaremongering has officially begun. After a month or two of unseasonal warmth, yesterday we read the first article screaming in capitals that a ‘HORROR WINTER’ lies ahead of us, with freezing temperatures and metres of snow. Currently it’s hard to believe, but if in a few weeks we are indeed huddling from the cold in our homes, you’ll be thankful to be wrapping your hands around a delicious hot boozy beverage.

We’ve been working with Kopparberg throughout the summer and this week our Brand Ambassadors have been out sampling their new spiced apple cider in London, meaning we have cider firmly in our minds. So it’s only logical that the recipe we want to share with you is for a mulled cider. Makes a nice, light change from mulled wine – and can easily be made child /driver/teetotaller friendly by replacing the cider with a good quality cloudy apple juice.

This recipe comes via the gorgeous blog At Down Under – which is well worth a browse through for some beautiful recipes – and we promise you it’s delicious.

Mulled Cider

  • 750ml cider or apple juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 vanilla pod, split in two
  • 1-2 tsp honey
  • 1 thick slice of ginger
  • Half apple, peeled, core removed and diced
  • Half lime zest

The instructions couldn’t be simpler – simmer the ingredients together in a pan over medium heat for 10-15 minutes – follow the same principle as when making mulled wine, be careful not to boil too rapidly or you’ll lose the alcohol. Strain and serve warm.
